The chapter documents the natural phenomenon of soil erosion, a process by which all protruding surfaces of land are worn down gradually by the elements – only to be uplifted and re-formed time and again by geological forces. The problem comes when human activity intervenes to hasten that wearing down process much beyond the rate at which nature cannot can redress it.
