Abstract
Environmental agreements between government authorities and industry to address particular environmental challenges are increasingly being looked to as a new, low-cost and effective means of solving environmental concerns. The role of these agreements, and their effectiveness, differ significantly according to country, industry, industry structure, the environmental problem being addressed; and depend significantly on the structure of the environmental agreements (EA) and which stakeholders are involved. This paper presents insights into the effectiveness, lessons and future use of EA’s in Europe, by looking in some detail at the structure and performance of six EA’s from across the European Union (EU), addressing different sectors and different environmental challenges.
