Abstract
Reviews literature on women and gender issues in the Middle East that places women at the center of the political arena. Employing a range of theories, methodologies, and genres of writing, the authors of these works offer new insights into history and the role of gender in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The works under consideration fall into three categories: women in the conflict from 1948 through the 1990’s; the role and status of women since the beginning of intifada of 1987; and works focusing exclusively on the lives and struggles of Palestinian and Israeli women. These works capture a number of voices and are a significant contribution to the historiography, which has tended to treat issues of women and gender as invisible or unimportant.
