Abstract
Nineteenth century Indian perceptions of the Europeans in their midst and the culture they represented changed gradually with exposure. Initially, the invaders were disdained as infidel barbarians. Eventually an appreciation for European systems of rationality and scientific thought grew. However, the destructive competitiveness and materialism were never seen as acceptable by Indian culture.
