Abstract
Recounts British consultations and events leading up to Gandhi’s (1869-1948) fast in early 1943. Gandhi had been detained the previous year after calling for British withdrawal from India and had declared he would fast to protest Great Britain’s failure to comply. Viceroy Lord Linlithgow (1887-1951), and his superiors were prepared to allow the Hindu leader to die from his fast. Gandhi, however, lived to see Linlithgow’s departure from India.
