Abstract
Explores the role of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last viceroy of united India, in the creation of the independent states of Pakistan and India in 1947. Although often held in heroic regard, he violated Great Britain’s promise to be a neutral arbitrator by playing political favorites and alienating the Muslim League, actions that created significant turmoil.
