In Chapter Four, Doran analyses how the eminent collapse of British authority in Palestine would affect the national interests of the Arab states. The Egyptian political elite judged that the British withdrawal from Palestine could lead to Jordanian territorial acquisitions. Thus, in order to distract King Abdullah from pursuing his “Greater Syria” project, Egyptian rhetoric promising to defeat the Zionist armies compelled Jordan, possessing the most powerful Arab army, to engage Jewish forces in Palestine.
