Reviews Sri Lanka’s development as a result of social policies implemented by the British, from its early colonial period (1833-1931) through its late colonial period (1931-70’s), and the effects of the colonial administration’s modernization, grant of partial self-rule, universal suffrage, and education on creating the later welfare state.
