Realistic Postneoliberalism - A View from South Africa

Abstract
The author rejects the notion that the 2008 global collapse of financial markets or the election results in the US signal a shift to postneoliberalism. He argues that the financial crisis will likely put public policy under major strain, leading to intense austerity, economic volatility, and potential reemergence of micro-neoliberal strategies. He also points out the continued faith in the multilateral system and the potential of relegitimization of neoliberalism and imperialism with the election of Barack Obama. He moves on to listing ways to address the problems, such as recall and reorganize campaigning associated with defense against financial degradation; reconsider national state powers in relation to environmental, economic, and geopolitical problems; and assist the redelegitimization of US power.
