Burggraf argues that until very recent times, the invisible hand concept has applied almost exclusively to men because women’s unpaid labor was never factored into the economic equation. The feminine economy has mostly operated outside the system of explicit prices and contracts that characterize the market economy. In this chapter, the author discusses the feminine economy and the need for an economic system that can somehow manage to balance the masculine/feminine, competitive/caring, work/family equation.
