Abstract
The populism and political leadership of Archbishop Makarios in Cyprus between 1950 and 1977 depended primarily not upon any objectively rational ideal but upon the abstract ideal of Greek nationalism from which he could not be separated, even by failure. His political oratory thus remained constant, deriving from his ultimately contradictory roles as churchman and politician and his attempts to deal with the problems which that entailed. This usually involved a highly elaborate symbolism, which was achieved at the expense of clarity, and programs attempting to integrate Cypriots by reference to Greek cultural themes.
