Examines some of the public and private archives in India that contain valuable manuscripts and documents on Indian history since the 17th century. The National Archives of India in New Delhi contain a variety of research sources, including materials that date from the British East India Company at the beginning of the 17th century to records on the postindependent state. There are also provincial and state archives that contain various local history documents. Private archival repositories that are owned by firms and individuals are now being acquired by the National Archives whenever possible.
