Abstract
The two “hard Left” successors to the Communist Parties since the fall of the Soviet Union, the Czech Communist Party and the East German Party of Democratic Socialism, are part of the European Parliament’s Group of the European United Left. The United Left is anticapitalist, antiglobalist, and distrustful of the United States. Nonetheless, the Czech and German Communist Parties differ. The German Party is more committed to pacifism and disarmament. The Czech Party seeks further democratization of the European Union and is more nationalistic than the German Party.
