Abstract
Ghana’s Public Records and Archives Administration Department at Tamale contains a large array of documents and manuscripts pertaining to the history of northern Ghana. Late in the colonial period, the Gold Coast archivist surveyed the territory’s district records, many of which were included in the collection at Tamale. When the Tamale office, then known as the National Archives of Ghana, grew overcrowded with documents, a new records office opened in 1959 at Kumasi to house archival materials from southern Ghana. The holdings of the archive at Tamale have been cataloged under such topics as historical manuscripts, special collections, departmental, court, and school records, and those of regional and district administration offices.
