Coolies’ in Prussia? Mobility, Chinese Workers, and the German Empire, 1890-1914

Abstract
During the second half of the 19th century, Chinese migrant workers traveled to and established independent communities in Southeast Asia, Australia, South Africa, Peru, Cuba, Canada, the United States, and finally Europe. However, the reluctance of Prussia to recruit Chinese agricultural workers and the experience of the few Chinese who worked on German ships or in German colonies shows how increased global mobility was accompanied by a new awareness of racial identity and nationalism.
