Traces the origin of local history in Japan from 713 to the present. Local history became very popular after defeat in World War II as a reaction to the extreme nationalism before and during the war. A national association of local historians was created, but composed of very few amateurs. The authors prefer the techniques of the amateur historian to those of the dominant university specialists.
