Abstract
Discusses oral history as part of the emerging field of public history in the context of the unprecedented and worldwide interest at the end of the 20th century in the past and in the various types of memory and commemoration. Also considers the interrelationship and differences between history and memory and the interpretation of oral sources as forms of culture and evidence for cultural change.
