Disputes the claims made by Sultana Afroz in a series of articles in the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs (see entries 52:6393, 53:5911, and 54:1893) that enslaved Africans brought the Muslim faith with them to Jamaica and that Islam has played a major role in Jamaican history. Such assertions lack scholarly documentation, distort the historical record, and are poorly argued. Afroz exaggerates the number of enslaved Muslims in Jamaica, misidentifies regions in Africa that allegedly were centers of Islam, and makes leaps in logic with respect to linguistics and chronology that are not credible.
