The Partition of Africa
Author(s)Robinson, Ronald; Gallagher, John
AbstractThis essay was intended by the authors to be an elaboration of their book, Africa and the Victorians. It attempts to generalize the book’s thesis from the British to other European participants in the Scramble. It accentuates the non-European or African factors in the partition, stressing that imperialism was not the cause of partition but rather an effect. As one critic remarked, this essay is “the most Afrocentric interpretation ever advanced.”
