Abstract
Examines British activity in Iran during Reza Shah Pahlavi’s rise to the throne in 1921-26, particularly British involvement in the coup that brought Reza to power. The British backed Reza as a man who could achieve order in Iran and thus further their interests. Britain encouraged Reza’s rise in two stages: local agents first gave assistance to the February 1921 coup, and then British ambassador to Iran Sir Percy Loraine aided Reza.
