Abstract
Examines Gamal Abdel Nasser’s diplomatic prowess in handling the American-Syrian crisis of 1957, when the Eisenhower administration attempted to overthrow what it regarded as a pro-Soviet regime in Syria, leading to a regional crisis that developed international status. The Egyptian president was able to counter the maneuverings of the Saudi king (who was attempting to use the crisis to gain leadership of the Arab world), maintain Syria’s bent toward Egypt, improve the standing of pro-Nasser factions within Syria, and prevent the Soviet Union from becoming Syria’s sole patron. The triumph was short-lived, however, because Nasser created a perceived level of responsibility and popularity that he could not maintain.
