Recent research into the relationship between class and status has focused on the various implications of defining status in terms of rights on the one hand and esteem on the other. It has concluded that enshrining equal rights for all citizens in law does not necessarily lead to equality of esteem. This is particularly the case as new social distinctions based on factors such as occupation, lifestyle and education begin to emerge and become interlinked with traditional distinctions of class.
