The Theft of Carnaval: National Spectacle and Racial Politics in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract
The historical development of, and contemporary discourses associated with, carioca, or Rio carnaval were examined. The carnaval’s correlation with national representation and racial politics was analyzed. The definition of race in carioca and national culture and responses of poor Brazilians of color to them were used to carry out the study. Moreover, disputes on contested meanings, rights, originality and appropriation were analyzed.
