British officials encouraged social differences in colonial Fiji by imposing different rules for different racial groups. They did not allow people from different racial backgrounds to mix as they felt that keeping them divided will reduce the danger of the Fijians becoming influenced by Indian nationalism. They encouraged race-based political representation for the people, which further divided the people.
