Anthropologists need to change their long-standing policy of declining to make value judgments about cultural differences and support human rights issues. Anthropology has always kept its distance from human rights discussions in the belief that its singular role is to observe and record. An example of anthropology’s refusal to take a stand on human rights matters is its apathetic attitude on the practice of female circumcision in many cultures.
