Abstract
This chapter seeks to begin defining a pathway for the South. It begins by reviewing the South’s current strategy towards trade and the environment, and arguing that there are compelling reasons for a shift in perspective. It then turns to the realities facing Southern producers in global markets, as sustainability factors become integrated into supply-chain programmers. The article then looks forward and presents a set of scenarios describing different ways of tackling the trade and sustainable development dynamic. It concludes by identifying some of the critical ingredients for a new proactive approach, and suggesting that fair and sustainable trade could become a new rallying call for the South.
