Ellen ‘t Hoen argues that one-third of the world’s population lacks access to essential drugs and the new international trade rules may lead to an even worse situation in the near future. She discusses access problems related to cost, insufficient production, lack of research and development and consequences of global trade regulation and concludes that new approaches are needed to protect and further the basic human right to access to health care.
