Labor Structures and School Enrollments in Developing Societies: Thailand and Kenya Compared

Abstract
Analyzes role labor markets may play in determining regional enrollment differences; male and female rates, secondary enrollment, and other issues. The analysis is inconclusive of the relationship between the agricultural sector and school enrollment and the authors attribute this stemming from the varied agricultural sub sectors. Agricultural wage labor is found to have a negative effect on enrollment rates. Secondary level schooling and low wage employment are seen as direct complements. The findings also do not support the family economy argument by refuting that the employment opportunities created in the manufacturing and the services sector compete directly with schooling.
