International Trade and Sustainable Development: An Integrative Approach

Abstract
There is an emerging consensus among economists about the relationship between trade and investment liberalization and sustainable development. Without the proper environmental and social policies in place, economic integration can create new problems for nations working to develop their economies in a sustainable manner and can exacerbate existing problems. Unfortunately, in the context of countless other priorities demanded by the liberalization process, many developing countries lack the capacity to institute the necessary social and environmental policies needed to facilitate and balance economic integration. This selection describes the basic theoretical framework shared by economists who write on the relationship between economic integration and environmentally sustainable development.
