Equality of What? On Welfare, Goods, and Capabilities
Author(s)
Cohen, Gerald A.
Abstract
The author responds to Sen’s capability approach in this article through an analysis of what others have said about the dimensions or respects in which people should be made more equal. He examines utilitarian calculations, the Rawlsian focus on primary goods, and Dworkin’s use of resources. He also proposes his own answer to the question which is based on ‘equality of access to advantage’.
