Abstract
Well-being and distress consist respectively in the satisfaction and frustration of desire. There are six fundamental categories of desire. The proper principle for the distribution of well-being and distress is the principle of equality: make well-off those who are badly off. It can be made precise, and is fundamental to egalitarian thought and struggle.
