Abstract
A discussion of the Charter 77 movement within the political context of Czechoslovakia. This was only one of several movements of political dissent developed in East Central Europe made possible by “the conjuncture of the decline of terror and ideology and the increasing reliance on economic control.” These movements, within their concern for human rights, expose the duplicity of Communist regimes, and question the competency of the Communist Party to rule.
