The emergence of a caste consciousness among Indian children is a problem generally unexplored in sociopsychological studies. Investigated were developmental changes in caste awareness among Indian children from Faizabad. A 6-item interview schedule dealing with caste naming & social interaction was used. Children were of similar socio-economic backgrounds & representative of 3 age groups – 4-7, 8-9, & 10-12 years. Results showed caste consciousness to increase with age, & caste membership to work as a basic determinant of social interaction among children.
