While theories of nationalism have multiplied and become more prominent in the last decade, the study of nationalism strangely remains outside political science. The study of nationalism in postindustrial societies should move away from identity and modernism and toward choices of political parties and movements within the constraints of political institutions. Globalization theorists have argued that socioeconomic changes are creating a new stateless nationalism. However, nationalists still seek to capture state power, and their behavior is still conditioned by state policies and the structure of state party systems.
