Abstract
Turkestani politics exhibited a struggle for cultural and moral authority among the Jadids and traditional elites of the Muslim society in 1917. While the Jadids propagated cultural reforms to bridge the gulf between different populations, the traditional elites resisted the project. The post-revolution struggle in Tashkent, the economic, cultural, and political capital of the Central Asian region, manifested the contradictions of the religion under colonial rule. The Soviets introduced dual power to increase the gulf between the Russian and local population.
