The current growth of cities is determined by four factors: the shift from manufacturing to the service sector (tertiarization), the use of information as a basis of the economy (informationalization), the spatial separation of command-control functions from production (locational disarticulation) and novel ideas in manufacturing and information that keep the economy active (innovation). These factors shaping the economic conditions of an area need to be integrated into sustainable urban programs to reduce tensions produced in shaping the demography of an area with economic activities.
