Abstract
People’s courts emerged out of the pervasive South African social disorder during the mid-1980s. They served as an effective catalyst of political change by winning the support of township residents. In order to achieve a less chaotic post-apartheid South Africa, political leaders must take into account the basic mechanisms behind the maintenance of people’s courts. Legal forums in townships must be considered to maintain order. Furthermore, the future legal system must be frequently reviewed and its credibility should always be protected.
