Abstract
There is a link between the recent outrageous acts of terror against the public and public servants and the reform movements that are quickly changing the practice of public administration. That link is discontent with the performance of government and a belief that government has lost touch with its citizens. There are things that public administrators can do to address the vilification of public servants, enhance citizen confidence in public agencies, reduce the threat of political violence, and restore the dignity and work of public service, including: 1. Take steps to ensure openness in agency decision making and sensitivity to diverse interests in policymaking. 2. Engage in dialogue with affected parties. Professional associations can play a critical role in promoting a different image, fostering public awareness of the many contributions public service makes to the public well-being.
