Abstract
The paper ponders the question of whether mismanagement of health issues can be interpreted as deliberate murder or violence. In particular, the paper discusses the relationship between state responsibility and AIDS-related deaths in South Africa. The paper considers the activist’s agenda on health and politics in comparison to mainstream theoretical approaches. The author brings attention to the disconnect in practice and social science theory between political responsibility and, in this case, access to ARV treatment. The author concludes that activists can help to bridge this disconnect by when necessary politicizing and neutralizing.
