Political Consciousness and New Social Movement Theory: The Case of Fuerza Unida

Zugman, Kara
Abstract
Zugman develops an alternative framework that will address some limitations of new social movement theory by using theoretical concepts derived from discourse theory, such as the case of Fuerza Unida. From the perspective of discourse theory, language is a significant battleground between dominant and subordinated groups. In the case of Fuerza Unida, Mexican and Mexican-American garment workers challenge the dominant notions of family and community articulated by their former employer, Levi Strauss.
