Archaeologists led by Marija Gimbutas have promoted the theory of an extensive Mother Goddess cult based on findings of female figurines in almost all European and Asian prehistoric cultures. The theories propose that matriarchy had been a dominant social structure that was unfortunately replaced by the current patriarchal systems. These theories have already filtered into popular thinking and has spawned unquestioning acceptance of the existence of a Mother Goddess without closer examination of archaeological data.
