Abstract
Issues concerning the relationship between politics and language are examined, focusing on the political crisis that ensued in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius in the midst of a proposed change in language policy. Topics include the effect of globalization on multi-linguistic societies and the disappearance of ancestral languages.
