Abstract
The authorities of Kamchatka peninsula, Russia have been encouraging the entry of multinational firms to mine its gold deposits. Residents, however, have been opposing these plans for fear that these might jeopardize their way of life and destroy the wildlife habitat. The industrial gold mining plan of KAMGOLD, a joint venture between the US, Canada and Russia, has been rejected by citizens because there are no existing environmental laws governing mining operations.
