Abstract
Chile’s success in securing annual growth of seven percent since the mid-1980s is examined to highlight the link between economic development and the presence of favorable cultural attitudes. It is shown that the predominance of progressive values among a people can significantly alter the course of a country’s development. This conclusion was reached after the links from culture to development and from economic policy to culture were analyzed. The roles of poverty and inequality in shaping public support for economic policies were also investigated.
