Psychologists have written about human motivation and the things that cause people to behave as they do. Although we may not consciously acknowledge that scarcity–the relationship between wants and the resources available to satisfy those wants–exists and is present in our daily lives, individuals in western cultures and societies strive to become better off. The concept of freedom was inextricably related to one’s well-being. In western cultures, the thinking that emerged was to get beyond securing only the necessities of life. The owning of property became essential if one were to become free.
