Abstract
The critical edge to multicultural studies is being lost as nations embrace multicultural education to enhance economic growth and development. Increasingly, multiculturalism is considered an instrument for improving competitiveness in the global economy. Global economic organizations and politicians want school systems to educate students to be good workers for the global economy. Economic nationalism is replacing the social justice impulse of multiculturalism. Missing in global education plans is preparation of students to deal with the economic and social problems spawned by the global economy. The global economy is plagued with the same social ills that sparked the growth of multicultural studies in the United States. Characterizing the global economy are racism, eradication of cultures, language imperialism, inequalities in political rights and income for women, neglect of homeless and poor children, and increasing differences in wealth.
