Abstract
Given Planet Hollywood’s prioritization of opening in new foreign markets, the chain’s immense popularity has significant ramifications for global consumer culture, as well as the international currency of foreign cinemas. As foreign media markets grow more dependent on U.S. media imports, and while foreign and independent” filmmakers work on establishing a U.S. market share, Planet Hollywood continues to exert the global centrality of mainstream Hollywood film. This international success, as I will argue, is borne out in its relationship to the film industry, the cult of the celebrity, and the general culture of consumption privileged and promoted by Hollywood.
