From Medical Anthropology to Anthropological Medicine

Abstract
Despite advances in both medicine and health care, major obstacles still exist in basic areas of healing and patient care. Much of the difficulty can be chalked up to the adversarial relationship between doctor and patient that has developed in many Western nations. False expectations on the part of both doctor and patient, fragmented care among many physicians, and general misunderstands between all parties have contributed to this less than ideal medical atmosphere. In this chapter, the author suggests that an anthropological approach to medicine may address several of these dilemmas, and provide a critical element in their solution.
