Anthropology and the Conservation of Biodiversity
Author(s)Orlove, Benjamin S.; Brush, Stephen B.
AbstractAnthropology contributes to conservation programs for protected areas and plant genetic resources with its emphasis on the participation of local people. Anthropological research highlights the influence of local knowledge and practices in the selection and maintenance of crop varieties and the conservation of rare and endangered species in protected areas. It explains various biodiversity-related concerns held by local populations and international conservationists. Moreover, anthropologists associate with various agencies in policy deliberations and helping local farmers.
