Abstract
World War Two was to provide the background for the first studies ever in anthropological history on national character where nations were explicitly taken as objects of analysis in terms of culture and personality. An investigation of the conditions under which these studies were conducted between the advent of World War Two and the beginning of the Cold War and an analysis of the content of their theoretical and methodological proposals may significantly contribute to some important debates in contemporary anthropology.
